He was born in the city of Seattle. His mother was from Saskatchewan, a province in Canada. He became interested in the saxophone after hearing a performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. When he was ten years old, he began playing the saxophone.
In his hometown of Seattle, he attended Whitworth Elementary School, Sharples Junior High School, Franklin High School, and the University of Washington. He failed his first audition for the jazz band when he was in high school, but auditioned again the following year and gained the first chair.
Along with music, he was also a member of the golf team at his high school. Since his older brother, Brian Gorelick, introduced him to the sport when he was eleven years old, he has been a fan.
