There are few more significant events on the horse racing schedule than the Breeders’ Cup. The biggest stars from across the globe will descend on Santa Anita on the first weekend in November, with some of the biggest purses in horse racing set to be awarded.
Many of the betting markets for some of the prestigious races are already open, and there is already a lot of value to be found the betting at this early stage. But, who are some of the selections that are currently being overlooked for Breeders’ Cup glory in 2023?
Tapit Trice
The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile betting has been dominated by Cody’s Wish for the best part of the last 12 months. However, the winner of the Dirt Mile looked way below his best on his previous start, and that could offer encouragement to take him on in 2023. Tapit Trice is a fascinating contender who could drop back in trip to the mile at Santa Anita after being out-stayed over a mile and two over his recent appearances.
He was beaten by over three lengths by Arcangelo in the G1 Travers in August, while he could only finish fifth from eight in the G1 Haskell. However, reverting back to a mile could bring out a huge improvement in the three-year-old. He was excellent over the distance earlier in the season, beating Shesterkin by over eight lengths to land allowance optional claimer success at Gulfstream. Dropping back in trip could suit his style, and he could be a runner that may be overpriced at the time of writing.

Dramatised
The sprint races at the Breeders’ Cup often throw up a big price winner, and that will likely once again be the case in 2023. A number of European raiders will make the trip over to California this year, and one of the most interesting contenders could come in the form of Karl Burke’s three-year-old filly Dramatised. She has been excellent throughout the season in tricky races, which includes a stunning win over five furlongs at Haydock in the G2 Temple Stakes, beating Equilateral by a length.
The quicker ground in the United States will play to her strengths, as she looked to struggle in slower conditions at York on her previous start when finishing over five lengths behind Live In The Dream in the G1 Nunthorpe. Dramatised already has experience of running in the US, as she was second to Mischief Magic in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2022. She’s a major contender if shipping to the United States.
Mawj
The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf can often be a trappy race, especially at this stage when it is unclear which European raiders will travel to California. However, a runner that appears to be at a huge price at this stage is Mawj. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor has repeatedly claimed that the three-year-old will target international races throughout the season, and she could be set to make a big impression at the Breeders’ Cup this year ahead of a busy campaign in the Middle East.
She has won on all three of her starts as a three-year-old, with the standout win coming in the G1 1,000 Guineas, as she finished half a length clear of the incredibly progressive Tahiyra. Prior to that win, she landed a pair of victories in Meydan, including the Jumeirah Fillies Guineas by a commanding eight-length margin from Fairy Cross. Mawj could yet look to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but the Filly and Mare Turf could present her with her best chance of victory at Santa Anita this year.
